Kamara’s historical work grew out of a simple frustration: the Liberian story is almost always told from 1822 forward, as though the coast and its interior had no politics, no commerce and no institutions before a ship arrived. He has spent years assembling the counter-evidence — oral traditions, archaeology, ethnography, historical linguistics, cartography, and early European and African records — into a single continuous account.

Liberia Before 1822 is the result: sixty chapters on the peoples, kingdoms, cultures and civilisations of the region, written to place Liberia inside the wider history of Upper Guinea, the Mali sphere, regional commerce and Atlantic interaction — with African agency at the centre and the limits of the evidence stated plainly wherever they fall.
